What is Digital Culture? Individual/Peer work; Group discussion; Class discussion. We will re-visit this question.

A trip in the wayback machine (Facebook, iTunes, MIT, hotmail, NCTE, Whitehouse.gov, NYTimes, Oakland University, Lori's first webpages)...who used the web, why, what did they know how to do? How have our expectations for web users/designers changed? How do we use it now? When did things begin to change?

What is Web 2.0? What's the real cost of the virtual world?

Homework: Read the introduction and chapters 1 & 2 in Selfe's book. Read over the Reading Response Schedule so you know when you are responsible for posting a response to our class wiki. There are no reading responses due this week.

Homework: Read Chapters 3 & 4 in Selfe's book; begin researching your first analysis project--First Reading Responses Due...is it your turn to respond? Email a copy of your project proposal to me before class on Thrusday, January 24th.

Pick a possible site for your wiki essay and find a partner to collaborate with on their wiki essay. By next Thursday, you'll have to know which site you're going to analyze for this wiki work. You'll have until the last day of the semester to complete the wiki work.

Introduction to digital stories and movies; creating digital stories and movies in Windows Movie Maker.

Homework: Read Chapters 1-3 in Ebo's book; bring a draft of your first analysis project to class next Thursday. I will need a copy of that draft as well. Reading Responses

Work Day for Group Projects (bring in your survey instruments & any recording equipment, cameras, etc you may need for this)...some project presentations today.

Our visit to Second Life (instructions for logging in and for getting access to OU's island are here). Instructions for things to note are here. Save these notes by emailing them to yourself...you will need them to complete the Moodle work next week.

Homework: Read Chapters 7 & 8 in Ebo continue working on your group project; have your research methods (surveys, interviews, etc) ready for class on Thursday. You will also want to bring any recording devices your group needs for this project (camera, camcorder, audio recorder) Reading Responses

Research Thursday: today you will work on gathering data for your projects in class.

No readings this week. Instead, visit the online community you're analyzing for your Wiki Essay and answer as many of the questions on this worksheet as apply to the political online community you're investigating. Your answers to those questions will inform your Moodle post for Tuesday, and that post will serve (I hope) as the first draft of your Wiki Essay.
